6. Happy People aren’t Afraid to be Vulnerable

Being vulnerable is a part of being human. Although this is super scary for many people, it’s a fact of life. We can never really know what will happen from one day to the next. (9/11 a case in point) You can be afraid of this or you can let it inspire you to truly live every single day as if it were your last. Life is short so don’t stay in relationships that bring you more pain than joy, don’t hold onto grudges, don’t wait until tomorrow to tell someone how you feel. You have this one life to live. Go for it!

7. Happy People Ask for Things They Need

Things you want or need don’t just fall out of the sky, onto your lap. Complaining will only get you so far (usually it only attracts other complainers). Don’t be afraid to ask for the things you need. Most people will be only too glad to help you out. Try it and see.

8. Happy People Aren’t Afraid of Change

If you pay attention to nature, you will notice that it’s always in motion, it’s always moving forward.  If you try to stop things from changing, well, you are fighting a losing battle (see 5 life changing ways to start your day). Your kids will not stay 10 forever. Your face will not be wrinkle free forever. Many people are afraid of change but as a wise person once said, everything changes, except change itself. You can fight it tooth and nail and it will still happen, or you can embrace it and believe that it will work out well for you. The choice is entirely yours.

9. Happy People are Never Defeated

This doesn’t mean that happy people don’t have setbacks or failures, but they don’t believe that the goal they are seeking will never be theirs. When someone told Edison that he had 700 failures before he made the light bulb work, Edison replied, “That’s not true. I simply found 699 different ways that don’t work.” Don’t let one mistake (or even 699 mistakes) stop you from trying to do whatever it is you want to do.

10. Happy People Live for Today

Of course, they plan for tomorrow, but they don’t worry about all those “what if’s” like: what if the boss doesn’t like my presentation? What if Johnny’s cold turns out to be pneumonia? Be alert in the present but don’t brood about the past or worry too much about a future that you ultimately can’t control. The happiest lives are those that are truly lived in the present. A happy present is an almost fail proof guarantee of a fantastic future. The only real way in which you can affect the future is by what you do today. So be happy TODAY.
