If you have read any health articles lately, you already know that lemons are used in almost all detox diets. They offer you better digestion, glowing skin, and even a slimmer silhouette. But did you know that lemons are also excellent at removing calcium stones from the urinary tract?

Lemon juice is more effective at healing thrush in the mouths of HIV patients than standard remedies, says a study published in the International Journal of Phytotherapy and Phytopharmacology. Researchers in Turkey found that lemons were very effective at removing urinary calcium stones. Lemon peels have long been used to keep intestinal parasites away, and the vitamin C rich juice helps to increase the mineral density of bones.

In addition to the benefits listed above, lemons can also regulate blood pressure, alleviate depression, have both antibacterial and antiviral properties, and they are very effective at treating acne.

Before you make that glass of lemon water, be sure you don’t toss out the peel. The rind of a lemon contains 10 times more vitamins and bioactive compounds than the fruit itself. Lemon rind greatly slows tumor growth, according to a study published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry.  Another study that was published in the journal of Nutrition and Cancer discovered that there was a dramatic reduction in squamous cell carcinoma in subjects who at the peel as well as consumed the juice. It’s thought that this is due to the high concentration of D-limonene oil that is in the rinds of citrus fruits. These limonene oils are a known inhibitor of several cancers, including lung, colon, and breast cancer.  Limonoids can actually slow the growth of cancer cells and encourage cell suicide. Also, the modified citrus pectin (MCP) has been shown to be easily absorbed by the digestive system and inhibits the spread of breast, prostate, or skin cancer to other organs in the body. With more than 22 anti-cancer compounds, in addition to the citrus pectin, limonene, and flavonol glycosides, which are responsible for stopping the cell division of cancer, lemons pack a real anti-cancer punch. Consuming citrus fruits can reduce your risk of cancer by as much as 50 percent, especially cancer of the larynx, stomach, mouth, and pharynx; this according to The Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization of Australia.
