Although many health experts have openly questioned the health claims of vitamin waters for years, some people continue to shell out good money for what is really nothing more than sugary water filled with artificial colors and flavors. Most of the so called “vitamins” are synthetic and are of a poor quality that is not easily absorbed by the body anyway.

Why buy these potentially toxic waters when you can make your own natural and healthy waters?  that have pure vitamins from living foods?

Although vitamins and water sound like the perfect pair, what they often don’t tell you is that many of these vitamin waters have as much sugar and calories as a can of coke. This makes sense when you consider that the most popular brand of vitamin water is made by the Coca Cola Company.

Did you know that most vitamin water contains both sucrose and fructose? Not only that, but many of the vitamin waters that contain citric acid come from GMO corn.

Why bother reading labels and spending a fortune on sugar water when you can easily make your own pure and natural vitamin infused water for pennies?

The easiest way is to invest in an infusion pitcher, which can be bought almost everywhere for less than $25 dollars. You can use such infuser to make not only a vitamin water but a detox tea as well. Simply add your ingredients and serve – either warm or cold! However, you can also use any glass jar that is large enough to hold a minimum of 10 cups of water, herbs, fruits or veggies.

Here are a few tips to make your vitamin water even better:

  • The longer you let the water sit, the more vitamins that will be infused into the water. However, if you plan to let it sit for more than 4 hours, remove the rinds from citrus fruits, such as oranges, otherwise the rinds also leech into the water and make it bitter.
  • Feel free to refill that jug! Once you have consumed all the water, those herbs and fruits are good for another round, so refill that jar with clean water and you are good to go again.
  • Cut your fruits and veggies into small pieces, or thin slices so that there is more surface for the water to interact with.
  • Always use clean, pure, filtered water, never tap water.
  • Always use organic fruits and veggies to avoid pesticide residue from entering the water.
  • The amounts used in these recipes can be changed according to your tastes. You will still be getting plenty of vitamins if you add more of one flavor and less of another.
  • Don’t be afraid to experiment with different flavors. If you have an overabundance of peaches, give them a try! Even flavors that don’t sound as if they go together, such as watermelon/raspberry/sage, give it a try if you have them on hand. Worst case scenario? It tastes terrible. Throw it out and try again!
