Adults who watch considerable amounts of TV tend to die at a relatively young age, according to a new study.

The study involved more than 13,000 adults in Spain, all of whom were college graduates, and about 37 years old when the study began. Subjects were followed for 8 years. During that time, there were 97 deaths. Those who were twice as likely to die? Those who watched more than three hours of television daily.

Researchers also found that the subjects total time spent sitting (including computer use, television time, or driving) were also linked to an increased risk of death during the time the study was in effect.

These findings held firm even after the scientists took into account other factors that could affect their subject’s risk of early death including smoking habits, daily calorie intake, body mass index, sex, age, physical activity level and whether their subjects tended to eat a Mediterranean diet. Sticking to a Mediterranean diet has been linked to a longer life.

The findings of this study strongly suggest that people should reduce their amount of sedentary activities, especially watching television, and get more physical activity in order to prevent premature death.

It’s interesting to note that when the researchers considered driving or computer use separately, these activities were not linked to early death, however, there should be future studies done to confirm the findings of this one study as the study began in 1999, before computer use was common.

Life is meant to be lived, friends, not watched from the sidelines. To get started living your best life, stop watching others live theirs on television. If this study is not enough to convince you to limit your television time, we have 11 more great reasons to get your to turn off the boob tube.

1. It Influences Your View of the World

Ask anyone who has ever been a paramedic, doctor, psychiatrist, lawyer, policeman, or FBI agent and they will be the first to tell you that television does not accurately portray their real life. In almost every area, television rarely shows the world, and life, accurately. Watching television excessively can result in disillusionment about what you can expect from the world and the way it really is. You can see this in people’s expectations about romance, love, dating, and sexuality. If you believe that there is a handsome and very rich man just waiting for you on the street corner and that bikini models are lonely girls just waiting for a nice guy to come along, you are going to have a bitterly disappointing life.

2. It Robs You of Energy

It’s true. The boob tube is robbing you of your valuable mental energy. Every time the television is turned on, your ability to concentrate is held hostage. Your attention is draw to that screen and your ability to concentrate on something else goes out the window.

3. It Influences Your Spending

Many people today think that they are immune, or that they are too smart, to be influenced by advertisers. You are dead wrong, friend. If that were the case, corporations wouldn’t spend billions, and perhaps trillions, of dollars on advertising if it didn’t work. They spend that money because they know it works and even if you don’t buy this product, they know you will buy that product.

4. It Takes Away from Important Relationships

Those people you see on TV? They aren’t real. Well, the actors are real, but the characters they are portraying are not. These people are thought up in some office and then breathed into life on some computer program and then put into your living room via television. You are literally surrounded by real life people living true, real lives all around you. Real people with real problems and real happiness. You need them and they need you as well. And do you know what else? Real people are the best reality show around.

5. It’s An Extra Expense

Seriously. Americans spend more than 6 billion dollars every year just paying for the electricity to power up those sets. Then add in the cost of cable/satellite, DVR’s, DVD players, movie subscriptions, Netflix, and you are talking some serious bucks.

6. It Means Less Sex (much less!)

It’s been proven in study after study that couples who keep a television in their bedroom have sex only half as often as they who don’t. Wow, isn’t that reason enough?

7. Keeps You from Rational Thinking

One of the problems with television shows is that they oversimplify reality. Television presents you with a subject or problem and in 30 to 60 minutes, everything is solved or answered and there’s that happily ever after ending. Real life does not work this way. This can cause harm to clear thinking by conditioning you to expect that all of life’s problems can be cleared up in 60 minutes max.

8. You Get Less Satisfaction

Perhaps Mick Jagger was talking about his television in his song? Regardless, a survey taken by the Journal of Economic Psychology, those who watched lots of TV reported that they had lower satisfaction levels with their lives, had more anxiety, and higher aspirations for material possessions than those who stated they watched lesser amounts of TV.

9. TV Means Lost Opportunities

In 2009, the average American watched 5.1 hours of TV every single day. That’s time you could have spent reading a book, walking your dog, going to the gym, enjoying nature, having sex, eating a meal with a friend, entertaining friends, traveling, enjoying a hobby, or even talking to family members on the phone. Think of the plans and dreams you are letting fall by the wayside by watching television?

10. Shortens Your Life

As mentioned above, this study shows that watching too much television can cut your life short and numerous other studies show that watching excessive amounts of television can cause obesity and other health problems.

11. It Fills Your Life with Negativity

Almost every television show, from soap operas to the news, from drama shows to reality shows, all focus on the negative. Think about it, watch any TV show and you will see tons of negative messages. There are a few exceptions to this rule, but in this case, majority rules. If you must spend time watching TV, try to be extremely picky about what you spend your valuable time watching.
