10. Sunlight
OK, so it’s not a food or spice, but sunlight is so important, we just had to add it to this list. The sun is so important to us that life on this planet cannot continue without it. As our bodies absorb sunlight, we are literally soaking up the energy from the sun and it is a virtual food for us. Think of your body as a walking solar panel! The sun gives us vitamin D, which regulates more than 2,000 genes. Sunlight can stop depression, increase energy levels, give pain relief, offer us protection from certain cancers, lower our risk of heart disease, and increase our longevity.
Too much of anything is not good for us, including the sun. However, it’s been shown in numerous studies that those who have chronic or deadly disease, such as heart disease or cancer, generally have the lowest levels of vitamin D in their bloodstream. Gradually work yourself up to 30 to 60 minutes of sun exposure (those with fair skin need less sun, those with darker skin need more) and if you live in an area that does not get much sun during the winter months, take a good quality vitamin D supplement.
