Most of us already know the things that will give us a happy life, filled with health and well-being. (And it sure doesn’t involve eating potato chips in bed, gossiping with your friends, or drinking a 24 pack of beer every weekend.)

Even though we know what’s good for us, we could all use a little reminder now and then. Check out our list of the top 12 things that we should do more often to lead happier lives. Now you don’t have to do every single one of these every single day, but if you tried to do even one of these every day, even if it was just for 5 or 10 minutes, you would see a huge difference in your life in a very short period of time. And that’s something a bag of Cheetos can never promise you!

1. Go to sleep one hour earlier

When our bodies are well rested, we are not only happier, but we are more productive as well. We feel good and therefore, make better decisions. Those dishes will still be there tomorrow, as will that Walking Dead marathon. Turn off the phone, shut down that tablet, and get to bed. Find out 10 tips for better sleep.

2. Make time to do nothing at all

Add that to your to do list, if you must! Seriously! Schedule a time out for whatever, as long as it’s not work. No doing laundry, calling your friends, or going to that spin class, this is time just to unwind. Play with your dog, take a book to the tub for a long soak, eat some ice cream in the park and watch the kids play. When you give yourself time to relax, you will be surprised at how good you feel later on.

3. Laugh more

Turn up that laugh quota! Kids laugh about 300 times a day, most adults only 4, why do you think that is? We are far too serious my friends! Surround yourself with people who make you laugh, read a few joke websites, subscribe to a few hysterical podcasts, or watch those funny animal videos on YouTube. Take a few minutes every day to LOL. 4. Think before you hit reply

Since our phones now make us available 24/7, we have gotten into the habit where we feel as if we simply MUST respond with 5 or 10 minutes of receiving a text or email or someone will think we are being rude. Trust me, there is no written law that says you have to respond within X number of minutes or risk being put on Santa’s naughty list. When you get important news, whether it’s good or bad, think about it for a minute. Take 15 or 20 even. Think about that news for a bit; roll it over in your mind before you hit that reply button. Especially if it’s something that made you angry, you should write your reply when you are a little calmer. Take just a few extra minutes, and you will feel better about your response.

5. Write something by hand

You still remember how to write, don’t you? Although digital communication is a great convenience, there’s certainly a huge difference between your husband texting you an “I love you, you’re so beautiful” message and writing it on a post it note and sticking it to the bathroom mirror, isn’t there? So write more! Grocery lists, thank you notes, even those sweet little notes everyone loves to find in their pocket or lunch bag.

6. Get dressed up

It seems as if everyone lives in yoga attire and that’s understandable because they are so super comfy, but sometimes you just need to take out that little black dress and some strappy little red shoes or take out that suit and tie from the closet, and remember how good we can look when we try. So get all dolled up then go find somewhere to show off; dinner at that hot, new restaurant, an art gallery, or even just drinks with the girls.
