It is surprising how much clutter can contribute to stress and disorganization. What is equally surprising is how much of a difference that eliminating clutter can make on your state of mind. One place we often neglect to clean up is the bathroom. Here is a list of some items which many of us store in our bathrooms, and allow to accumulate through either design or neglect. Let’s take a look at how you can improve your life by making some simple changes to your bathroom clutter collection.

The simplest way to eliminate clutter is to know which things you should stop hoarding. Here’s a list of some items to throw away and why.

1. Expired and old items

Household products which have outlived their shelf lives and overstayed their welcome are some of the most common contributors to bathroom clutter. Old toothbrushes? Throw them out. Ratty old sponges, loofahs, and combs? Ditto. Other items like makeup, old toothpaste tubes, medicine bottles and nearly empty shampoo bottles can accumulate a lot faster than you might think. Another factor are travel-sized bars of soap, shampoos and other items acquired while travelling. Find a separate cupboard shelf or box to consolidate these items in, rather than leaving them scattered around. A general rule is that if you have not used it in a few months, just get rid of it.

2. Items which are susceptible to humidity

These include sponges, loofahs, headbands, and towels of all sizes. While we’re not saying that towels don’t belong in the bathroom, it is easy to get them wet and just forget about them. When this happens, they can become contaminated with mold or mildew. Keep your towels and towelettes dry and organized to avoid this problem.

3. Storing dirty clothing

This is another one that many of us do without thinking. While it may be convenient to store dirty laundry in the bathroom, it can also be unsightly and contribute to clutter. On top of that, clothing can be susceptible to mold and mildew as well. If you have no choice, it is okay to have a laundry basket in the bathroom, but consider keeping it the bedroom or closet instead. And for God’s sake— no matter which room you choose, don’t let it pile up on the floor.

4. Original packaging

You can save a lot of space by removing products such as razors and q-tips and consolidating these items in glass jars or Tupperware.

This isn’t rocket science. Eliminating clutter and the stress and annoyance that goes with it is not complicated. You just have to take 30 minutes to deal with the problem and before you know it— you’ll have a nice clean bathroom and a cleaner life.
