As cold and flu season starts heating up, you will find yourself stocking up on those virus fighting herbs and tea lends, don’t forget about another common illness that seems to make its go around at least once every winter; strep throat.

Strep throat is probably one of the most painful and annoying illnesses that come around each winter, but it doesn’t have to keep you down and out for long. Strep throat often strikes children but since it is highly contagious, if one family member gets it, chances are good that everyone in the family will get it in time.

What Causes Strep Throat?

Strep throat is caused by a group A type of bacteria called Streptococcus progenies, or more commonly called strep throat. This type of bacteria is spread through airborne droplets, such as by sneezing or coughing, and is quite contagious.

What Are Common Symptoms?

The most common symptoms people get with strep throat are, of course, a painfully sore throat, fever, and enlarged lymph nodes under the jaw. This is more than just your run of the mill sore throat; this one feels like you swallowed a steel wool pad. Many people find they can’t bear to swallow anything firmer than hot tea, ice water, and jello.

There are more serious symptoms that aren’t as common but are still a result of strep throat. Some people experience vomiting and nausea, even some abdominal pain and swollen lymph nodes in the abdomen. Many people find they have white patches on their tonsils or at the very back of their throats, even streaks of pus!

How Is It Treated?

Now we get to the nitty gritty of strep throat. If you go to a conventional doctor, they will most certainly give you a prescription for antibiotics such as amoxicillin or penicillin. But is there anything you can do to kill off this infection without the use of antibiotics? Of course there is! Take a look at this simple home remedy that should kick strep throat to the curb in about 48 hours.

Natural Remedy for Strep Throat

  • 3 Tablespoons of raw, organic honey
  • 3 to 5 Slightly crushed cloves of organic garlic
  • 1/8 Teaspoon of Cayenne powder

Mix these together and take one teaspoon of this mixture every hour. Simply swallow the garlic cloves whole, you don’t need to chew them. Continue making this mixture and eating a teaspoon of it every hour until your sore throat is completely gone. Don’t drink or eat anything for at least 20 minutes afterwards so these ingredients can do their work on your throat.

This mixture is very soothing and even those who don’t care for garlic will find that, when mixed with honey, it tastes pretty good and works super-fast. Many people with strep throat lose their voices and this should restore your voice in a matter of hours! This mixture might seem too simple to fight something as strong as strep throat, but it’s absolutely 100 percent effective.

Be sure that the honey you are using is real honey, raw and organic, the way nature intended it. A great deal of the stuff you buy at the store isn’t honey at all, but some type of corn syrup with a bit of coloring and perhaps a couple drops of pollen. Raw honey has about 5,000 enzymes, 27 minerals, 22 amino acids and lots of antibacterial properties that will help to kill that strep throat dead it it’s tracks. Find out more everything you wanted to know about raw honey.

Garlic is also a natural antibiotic that not only kills the bad stuff, but stimulates your body to produce more of the friendly bacteria. This beats the heck out of pharmaceutical antibiotics that kill both good and bad bacteria. When making this mixture, you don’t have to choose the biggest or the tiniest cloves, medium sized cloves will work well. Simply peel them, then crush them a bit to release their power. Don’t make too much of this tonic in advance as garlic begins to lose its effectiveness within about 15 minutes after you crush them. So mix enough for about the next two hours, and then mix up another batch.

Cayenne pepper will bring fresh blood to the area to promote healing. It’s also high in vitamin C, which supports the immune system.

Our bodies can naturally heal themselves and often only need just a little help from Mother Nature to repair themselves.
