You are probably familiar with several different types of essential oils but grapefruit may be one that is not as commonplace. This citrus fruit requires a certain type of palate because unlike many fruits it is not overly sweet. Some varieties, such as red or pink grapefruits may be a little sweeter than the plain variety. Some people like to sprinkle their grapefruit with a little brown sugar and broil it to get their citrus serving in at breakfast time.

As with most essential oils, grapefruit oil is accumulated from the peel of the fruit. It has a host of uses and many of them are health related. One of the main proponents of grapefruit oil is limonene which can also be found in the peels of lemons and oranges. Grapefruits contain up to 95 percent limonene which has been proven to help fight off different types of cancer. Grapefruit oil is recognized for being a vital part in detoxifying the body. It helps to eliminate extra fluids, burns fat, and removes toxins.

Grapefruit oil is safe to use but should be diluted before you put it to work. You can use olive oil, almond oil or coconut oil, or even water to dilute it. You should not take grapefruit oil internally without diluting it and be careful when you use it topically. Try it on a small area of your skin to make sure you are not allergic to the oil or that you don’t break out in a rash. Grapefruit oil should not be used by women who are pregnant or are nursing, by children, or cats.
