7. The Leech

This person will suck you in so fast, you won’t even know what happened. The Leech is always broke or is always missing something. They ask so nicely if they could borrow X from you just this once, they often promise to pay you back or buy you one next time, but they never do. They NEVER have anything they need, and they just know YOU will provide them with it. And you DO because you are a nice person. The Leech is not. If you constantly find yourself giving this person a cigarette, some sunscreen, $5 for Starbucks, buying them lunch, buying them drinks after work, etc., then you know you have picked up a Leech. The good thing about Leeches is that they are easy to get rid of. Simply start saying no. You don’t have any more gum, you only have $2 for the day and you left your debit card at home, and sorry, you brought your lunch today. Once the Leech figures out his funds have dried up, he will move on to another sucker.

8. The Old Friend

Old friends are great for talking about the past and remembering good times but some Old Friends are only interested in talking about old times and doing things the old way or remembering the way things used to be. They are so entrenched in the past that they actually prevent you from moving forward with your life. Old Friends talk about the past so much that it actually depresses you. They may be sweet, but they are doing you mental harm. Cut them out of your life or limit yourself to one or two visits each year.

9. The Gossip

Although gossip can be interesting and sometimes even provide you with vital information at times, but when you have a friend who really only talks to you to obtain more fuel for the gossip fires or who spreads the worst kind of unsubstantiated, unreliable gossip about everyone she knows, this person needs to go. The Gossip keeps you away from real friends as no one is willing to share personal information that might be given to her and she keeps you from feeling good about yourself. After all, if Mrs. Jones is getting paid twice as much as you for doing the same job, perhaps you aren’t as good at your job as she is. You don’t need this person in your life. Tell her you are too busy to talk but you will call her later and then don’t.

10. The Narcissist

This is, by far, the most damaging person in your life. The Narcissist is never wrong. They will completely convince you that everything is your fault. They are never, ever there for you, but will make you feel terrible if you are not there for them. They will often lie right to your face and then convince you that you must be crazy if you insist that they said something else. They will tell you that you are crazy and the worst part? You believe them because they are such charming liars! Narcissists are always the victim, they are totally blind to your accomplishments but they demand recognition for the smallest accomplishment. They will manipulate and control you and pretend that they care about you but the truth is; a Narcissist only cares about themselves. If you find yourself questioning your sanity with just this one friend, you can almost guarantee that this person is a Narcissist. Run — do not walk — away from this person and never, ever take another phone call from them again!
