Just Say No to This Way of Thinking and Improve Your Health Instantly
Has anyone ever told you to stop being a negative Nellie? Mind over matter is a well- known saying in America, but one that few people actually put into practice.
However, everyone should start considering this old saying, and put some serious effort into “mind over matter.” This saying should be considered to be a stress disease model where one’s negative thoughts and emotions are just as capable of changing one’s body for the worse, every bit the equivalent of eating a diet of nothing but candy and soda pop.
If you have read the book “The Secret,” or seen the movie, then you have an idea about how this type of thing works. Studies show that when athletes run through a race in their mind — really feeling it, imagining their legs pumping, passing other runners, reaching the finish line ahead of everyone else, and crying with happiness and gratitude at the end when they receive their medal, their brain registers every thought as if they really did run the race. In other words, there is no difference in the brain function of a runner who actually ran the race as one who can visualize the entire thing. As far as your body is concerned, what your brain thinks it did, it did it.
Telomeres are small structures at the end of chromosomes that hold them together, similar to the glue on the end of a shoelace. When that little bit of glue falls apart, your lace become unraveled. Telomeres work in much the same way with your chromosomes. When you are born, your telomeres are quite long but, over time they become shorter and shorter with “wear.” At the end of your time on this earth, they will finally fall apart, and your chromosomes unravel, so to speak, and so do you. Studies have shown that mothers who had children who were chronically or terminally ill had telomeres that were approximately 10 years shorter than the mother’s actual age. It appears that ongoing stress and negative thought patterns have a negative effect on our healthy telomeres, and can therefore shorten our lives.

One research scientist, Dr. Masaru Emoto, studied water crystals for years. He tried playing different types of music to water crystals as well as using different words and emotions to other water crystals. Dr. Emoto was shocked to find that positive words lead to beautiful crystal formation and negative words led to irregular and ugly crystal shapes and colors. This should not be taken lightly when you consider the human body is made up of almost 70 percent water!
Dr. Dean Ornish of the University of California, San Francisco, wrote an article,“Healthful Living May Lengthen Telomeres and Lifespan.” In his study, Dr. Ornish studied groups of men. One group was asked to eat a plant-based, whole food, healthy diet and follow stress management techniques such as yoga and meditation, along with walking for 30 minutes each day and spending more time with friends and family. The other men were the control group and were given no instructions. At the end of this five year study, the group that followed the instructions given by Dr. Ornish had their telomeres lengthened by 10 percent. The other men had a three percent reduction in their telomeres.

There have been numerous studies showing that the placebo effect has just as much of a positive effect as actual treatment. Subjects who simply had positive faith in their doctor, in their ability to heal themselves and believed that the “treatment” they were undergoing would be successful, had complete recoveries. The mind’s ability to think negatively produces negative effects in the body, and positive thinking can create positive effects in the body.

By stopping negative thinking, you can live a more successful, happier, more enjoyable, healthier life. Negative thinking inhibits you from getting what you want and achieving your goals. It makes you feel worse than you normally would, and it affects those around you. Negative thinking has absolutely no benefit to your life whatsoever, so why continue?
The less value your mind puts on negative thinking, the easier it will be for your subconscious to let go of negative thoughts. In other words, it is much better to not build up a great deal of fuss about negative thoughts. Don’t think “When I think negative thoughts they are hurting me, stopping me from being successful, and making me sicker. No wonder I feel sicker, it’s all these negative thoughts that have so much power over my life.” Your thoughts alone are giving value to negative thoughts. Negative value, to be sure, but value all the same.
Instead, let’s replace the word negative with the word neutral. Anything in your life, any emotion, and any thought that isn’t positive is neutral. Neutral thoughts have no benefit whatsoever, so why bother with them? Something with no value is easy to dismiss. In this way, you can motivate your mind to turn to something that does have value — in fact, great value: positive thoughts and emotions.
Don’t fear negative thoughts as fear is a negative emotion. Simply dismiss negativity as valueless. Focus on the positive, and the negative will diminish in time.
Hippocrates once wrote, “If someone wishes for good health, one must first ask oneself if he is ready to do away with the reasons for his illness. It is only then that it will be possible to help him.” If you believe you are sick all the time, it is a given that you will be exactly that: sick all the time.
This is not to say that if you do have a very real illness that you should ignore it and “wish” that it will go away with positive thoughts. However, what you can do is to believe with all your being that your doctor is doing the right thing, that your medication is working like a charm and that you will heal completely in a very short time.
Mind over matter is very real and very powerful. Your mind has the power to make your “matter” sick and diseased. Learn to control and reduce the stress in your daily life. Learn to put things in perspective. So your spouse wants to paint the deck tan and you want to paint it brick. Is it really worth all the name calling and stress of arguing about it? Flip a coin and be done. Learn to be mindful of negative thoughts and attitudes. When we entertain negative thoughts and emotions, we are not only poisoning ourselves, but everyone around us.
