Levels of obesity around the world are at all-time highs, and every day it seems like there’s some new diet, or some other new magic bullet solution, that will help people get rid of that unwanted fat once and for all. But as we all know, a lot of these solutions are bogus, and some are downright counterproductive. How do you cut through the noise and find the solutions that actually work?

This confusion about what works versus what does not is compounded by another problem: It’s a simple medical fact that women tend to put on weight more easily than men do, and have harder time getting rid of it. Luckily, we’re going to explore three proven solutions that are backed by science, and have helped women get rid of unwanted fat.

1. Clean Diet

Yes, exercise is important, but the key to losing weight is always going to be diet first and foremost. Eating plenty of vegetables, fruits, low-glycemic index carbs (sweet potatoes, for example), high quality proteins, and good fats like walnuts is a good start. But oftentimes, what you choose not to do in life has just as much, if not more of an impact that what you do choose to do.

Make the decision to reduce the amount of sugar in your diet. It’s sugar more than anything else that makes people fat, and nowadays people eat far too much of it. “Diet” sodas have never helped anyone lose weight, and there’s nothing healthy about them. Drink more water and green tea instead. After a few weeks, you won’t even miss the taste of soda.

The modern diet in most Western countries also includes far too many omega-6 fatty acids, which can make you put on additional pounds. Reduce the amount of vegetable oils and polyunsaturated fats in your diet as much as possible. Omega-3 fats, like those found in extra virgin olive oil or fish, however, are quite healthy for you.

Okay, so now you’re eating better and exercising. The good news is that you’re at least halfway there. But sometimes, the little extra things we do in a diet program that make a significant difference. Let’s examine these nutritional hacks in more detail.

2. Caffeine

One of the key ingredients in those old-fashioned diet pills is caffeine. While those pills really aren’t very healthy for you, the manufactures included caffeine for a reason. The evidence shows that it really can contribute to weight loss. However, it must be taken correctly.

More modern anti-cellulite creams include caffeine because of the unique “lypolitic” properties of this compound. What this means is that caffeine essentially has the ability to help break down fat cells. It also has certain thermogenic qualities which help your body burn calories more effectively.

One of the real benefits of caffeine, however, is that it simply reduces your appetite. The molecular qualities of caffeine can act as an appetite suppressant. The simplest way to reduce the amount of fat you put on is to simply take in fewer calories, so indeed, it’s easy to see how this could help women lose weight.

A study at the School of Pharmaceutical Sciences in Sao Paulo, Brazil, found that topical application of a siloxanetriol alginate caffeine emulsion was effective at reducing fat cell diameters in female mice. More research needs to be done to fully understand how applicable the findings are for humans, but it further reinforces the notion that caffeine can have an impact on fat cells.

Does this mean that you should start downing espressos like there’ss no tomorrow? Not so fast. When used in excess, caffeine can cause its own set of problems, like irritability, nervousness, trouble sleeping, and elevated blood pressure. But when used properly according to instructions from a doctor, it can be beneficial for women who are trying to lose weight.

3. Plan Your Meals in Advance

It’s much easier to stick to a diet if your meals are planned and ready to go ahead of time. Instead of trying to find healthy stuff during your lunch break at work, spend Sunday afternoon cooking a bunch of healthy food that will last throughout the week. This is a technique commonly used by bodybuilders who are trying to reach a certain weight, but it will actually work for anyone who wants to improve their health. If you have healthy meals ready when it’s time to eat, you will have less temptation to stray from your diet.
