6 Holistic Approaches to Fevers
Modern Western medicine has been instructed to treat every symptom that you bring to their attention. Childhood fevers, for example, are often given medications to reduce them. However, fevers are simply your body’s response for destroying viruses and bacteria. Instead of working against your body, help it do its work and reduce a fever naturally instead.
Alternative medicine practitioners take a very different approach to fevers. They want to provide support to the child’s immune system so it can learn and respond to foreign organisms. Certain childhood infections can be very valuable in challenging the immune system, and thereby, strengthen it as a result.
There are many alternatives to acetaminophen or aspirin or other over the counter fever reducers. These natural alternatives are inexpensive, have no side effects, and are completely safe and others that will boost the immune system and have antimicrobial, antibacterial, and antiviral compounds.
Take a look at these 6 natural, holistic approaches to reducing fevers.
1. Topical Treatments
To lower a fever, use a poultice made from the root of an Echinacea plant. A cold compress applied to the forehead and a cold pack to the torso can be used as well. You can also try rubbing the body with apple cider vinegar.

2. Homeopathy
A fever is actually a sign of a healthy child, one whose immune system is responding acutely and vigorously to an infection or virus. One of the best ways to determine if your child’s fever needs to attended to by a doctor; first monitor your child’s response. Are they in pain, not eating, vomiting, and generally listless? If this is the case, you should consult your doctor. However, if your child seems to be alright other than a fever, your child’s immune system should be able to handle the problem or you can apply some of the treatments listed here to help you child. These remedies won’t remove the fever, but they will help your child’s own immune system finish healing your child’s body. Some of the homeopathic remedies you might want to try include Belladonna, Bryonia, Gelsemium, Aconite, and Ferrumphos.
3. Herbal Medicine
Low grade fevers are actually beneficial and don’t need to be reduced. Many times, a day in bed with some healthy bone broth soups and plenty of water are all that is needed to help your child’s body return to normal. Try offering herbal teas such as elderflower, peppermint, and yarrow to help the body cope with a fever, but at the same time, not suppress it. Read more about 10 herbs than can heal.
4. Ayurvedic Medicine
Dr. Virender Sodhi will tell you that fever below 102 are nothing to be concerned about. However, to assist the body, give your child a light, nutritious diet, cold sponge baths, and homeopathic remedies such as Sulfur, Belladonna, and Aconite.
5. Hydrotherapy
To lower a high fever, use a wet sheet pack or immerse your child in a bath of cool water. Cool water sponge baths are also helpful, especially when combined with a fan.
6. Aromatherapy
To cool the body internally, use peppermint, eucalyptus, or bergamot. To induce sweating, use basil, lavender, rosemary, tea tree, peppermint, cypress, or chamomile.
You might also want to consider using fermented cod liver oil, probiotics, or soups that use spices and vegetables that will stimulate your child’s immune system.
Keep in mind that a very high fever can cause severe brain damage or even death, so always consult a doctor when necessary.
Ways to tell if a fever is serious enough to see your doctor:
- A fever that lasts more than 2 days
- A fever of over 104
- An infant under 3 months of age with a fever over 100.4
- Fever combined with other symptoms such as extreme listlessness, a stiff neck, or a sensitivity to light
- Fever combined with any sign of respiratory distress
- If you believe the fever is the result of toxins or ingested poisons
- Severe vomiting accompanied with the fever
Consider giving your child large doses of fermented cod liver oil as this seems to shorten the duration of many illnesses.
