Heavy metal toxicity, or heavy metal poisoning, is much more common in the general public than most people imagine. This is a dangerous condition that can cause many debilitating symptoms.

What exactly is heavy metal poisoning? This happens when the body is exposed to chemicals and heavy metals on a regular basis. They begin to accumulate in the soft tissues of the body and eventually present themselves as symptoms we don’t usually associate with toxicity.

Symptoms can vary greatly depending on which metals you come into contact with. The most common metals are lead, arsenic, cadmium, and mercury. The detox process is not a quick one, but it can help stop the symptoms you are experiencing.

Some people are simply more prone to accumulating heavy metals than others. This is because of lifestyle or even a genetic predisposition. It has been estimated that about 50 percent of Americans carry a mutated gene (MTHFR) and a lack of a particular enzyme, which makes their bodies less capable of processing toxins. This means they are unable to detox naturally.

If you decide you wish to detox from heavy metals to see if this resolves your health issues, be certain to exercise caution and don’t expect dramatic results in a matter of days — although that can happen. Sometimes, while your body is detoxing, you might appear to get worse or have more intense symptoms. This is usually a good sign that the body is detoxing. Be patient, and be kind to your body during this period.

Green smoothies that contain detoxing herbs or foods, such as cilantro, are easy yet healthy ways to detox from heavy metals. Cilantro alone is known to cleanse heavy metals from the body. Combined with chlorella, this powerful duo has been shown in studies to remove 87 percent of lead, 74 percent of aluminum, and 91 percent of mercury from the body within six weeks. Chlorophyll is also a powerful detoxifying agent that turns free radicals into harmless, neutral compounds. The darker green a vegetable is, the more chlorophyll it contains.
