How to Make Your Own Homemade Tiger Balm: Recipes that Work!
When you go to the gym or play a particularly hard game of ball, or even just moving into a new house, you can find yourself with aches and pains from sore muscles. Nothing works quite as well as a soothing application of Tiger Balm. Did you know that you don’t have to run to the store to pick up some heat pads or those heating gels for relief? You can make your own soothing Tiger Balm right at home. There are several recipes around, but the basic ingredients are the same. The following recipes are great for sore muscles, as well as chest colds and congestion.
Things You Will Need:
- Eucalyptus oil
- Clove oil
- Coconut oil
- Extra virgin olive oil
- Peppermint essential oil
- Herbs: sage, willow, wintergreen, black haw (these are optional)
- Glass jar or metal container
- Wash cloth or other type of soft cloth
Basic Tiger Balm Recipe
1. Mix ½ ounce of beeswax with 2 ounces of coconut oil or olive oil in a double boiler. If you don’t have a double boiler, you can simply put a small pan inside a larger pan that has about 2 inches of water in it. Heat this mixture slowly using low heat, stirring constantly until it is completely melted. Remove from heat.
2. Add 10 drops of eucalyptus oil, 10 drops of peppermint oil, and 5 drops of clove oil into the beeswax mixture. Stir this well and allow to sit for just a few minutes to cool.
3. If you want to use the dried herbs at this time, such as the ones listed above, boil 1 tablespoon of herbs in one pint of water. Boil until the water is reduced by half. Strain the herbs and add the desired amount of herbal water into your beeswax mixture. Heat this mixture again until the water has evaporated and allow to cool for 5 minutes.
4. Pour the beeswax mixture into your glass or other type of container and allow to sit until completely cooled.
5. Using either your fingers or a small, clean cloth, place a bit of your homemade Tiger Balm on the affected area and apply using a gentle, circular motion. You can also saturate a cloth and place directly on the chest for relief of cold symptoms. Find out other terrific cold and flu fighting recipes.

Tiger Balm Recipe #2
This recipe might be a bit warmer than others, but it feels so good on sore muscles!
- 10 Drops Camphor essential oil
- 9 Drips Peppermint essential oil
- 8 Drops Eucalyptus essential oil
- 5 Drops Clove essential oil
- 5 Drops Cinnamon essential oil
- 1 Ounce beeswax
- ¼ Cup of either coconut, almond, or olive oil
Follow the same directions as above. You can also add the herb infused water to this mixture also if you like.
Be sure to find a container that has a tight fitting lid so that the essential oils do not evaporate. Close the container tightly when not in use.
