Yep, that’s right, you read correctly: Eating fat can help you lose fat. “But how on earth does that work and where do I sign up?!”, – we hear you asking. Well, read on to discover these nine foods which are high in the kind of fats that can help you shed those pounds without feeling short-changed on flavour.

1. Salmon

And we’re talking about the wild variety. That deep red flesh is bursting with heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids, and just two portions a week of this fish can bring considerable health benefits. The high concentrations of omega-3’s coupled with some serious protein mean that a portion of wild salmon keeps you feeling fuller longer and over time has even been proven to lower your blood pressure.

2. Dark chocolate

Not only is number two delicious, but it’s packed full of flavonoids which are powerful antioxidants and fat-burning agents to boot. Dark chocolate also contains stearic acid, which studies have shown to slow down digestion, which leaves you feeling more satisfied and less likely to reach for unhealthy snacks. Although remember: always go for the one with the highest cocoa content, that’s the good stuff. Avoid any dark chocolate high in sugar and other additives which would seriously diminish its fat-fighting powers.

3. Olive oil

A true taste of the Mediterranean, but a fat in its purest form, so how can it make you lose weight? Well, olive oil is bursting with those heart-healthy fats, antioxidants, and vitamin E and, when combined with a Mediterranean diet rich in fish, vegetables, and legumes you have a one-way ticket to lose that excess weight and keep it off. This one is truly a superfood in its own right!

4. Avocado

Did you know that avocados are actually a type of berry? Weird, right? Well these babies are super effective when it comes to losing weight, particularly that non-budging belly bulge type of weight. High in monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats, avocados are extremely good for your heart with a profile very similar to olive oil. Studies have shown that the high levels of these fats can actually reduce the expression of certain fat genes. Time to get that butter out of your fridge and start using nature’s alternative!

5. Cottage cheese

Calling all cheese lovers! Can you imagine being able to eat cheese AND lose weight? Yep, us either. But, due to its low calorie and high protein content combo, cottage cheese achieves just that by leaving you satisfied for much longer. Not only that, but dairy products are also high in calcium, which has been proven to help you burn fat quicker.

6. Nuts

Nuts are one of the fattiest foods out there, but wait, it’s the good type! The fats found in nuts are not the type that make you gain weight. In fact, with their super healthy mixture of good fats, proteins, and fiber, nuts are great for your metabolic health and will help your body burn excess fat. Great as a snack or sprinkled on yogurt or granola, nuts are also highly versatile. But, like the dark chocolate, avoid nuts coated in salt and sugar as this will affect to the opposite of your weight loss goals.

7. Coconut oil

Coconut oil is a very special one on this list, and probably the most potent. This oil is full of a type of fatty acid called Medium Chain Triglycerides, or MCTs for short, but what the heck are those, right? Well, much like the other entries on this list, MCTs keep you fuller for longer, preventing you from reaching for unhealthy, high-fat snacks. They can also actually increase the calories you burn through the powerful effect they have on your metabolism.

8. Lean beef

Very similar to the wild salmon at number one, lean, grass-fed beef has more omega-3 fatty acids than you can shake a stick at! Highly waistline-friendly, lean beef has much less of the bad fats that processed meats contain so you can enjoy a juicy, guilt-free burger while reaping the health benefits.

9. Eggs

Previously believed to be enemies of weight loss, research has swung in the favour of this much-enjoyed breakfast food. So, whether you like them sunny side up, boiled, or scrambled, researchers have discovered that eating eggs in the morning can boost your metabolism for the rest of the day. This is thanks to their high protein content and what’s more, they even contain nine essential amino acids as well!
